Cookouts are a quintessential part of the summer months! With Rhode Island reopening, now is the time to (responsibly) celebrate the gift of spending time with loved ones. And what better way to do that than with food?
But what nobody tells you about hosting a cookout is the strain of carrying groceries, choosing what healthy foods to serve, and moving furniture around to create the perfect space. Here are some tips to choose healthier food options and how to lift and move the groceries without straining your back:
Choose Healthier Food Options
Offer a healthier meat option, like fish, turkey burgers, or tofu. You can also add more flavor by using a variety of toppings, like sauces and spices, to make your healthy options more exciting. Additionally, roasting some vegetables as a topping or side dish will offer some healthy diversity to your cookout. For a more refreshing dessert, try cooking fruit kabobs with pineapples, strawberries, grapes, apples, and bananas!
Keep Proper Form While Carrying Groceries
By bending at the knees, you are removing all the pressure that you normally put on your back, which prevents lower back strains and injuries. Pull your belly button in towards your spine to tighten your core. This avoids any additional stress that would be put on your back.
Keep Your Grocery Bags Close & Light
When lifting your shopping bags in and out of your car’s trunk, keep them close to your body instead of holding them out too far. If they are close to your body, they will be easier to control. It’s equally as important to keep the weight of your bags light and avoid carrying too many at a time.
Put Your Grocery Bags in a Crate
To avoid all your items from spilling around your trunk, place your bags in a crate. If your items stay in one place, you won’t have to strain your back by reaching deep into your trunk.
What if I'm Still in Pain?
By following these tips, you’ll be able to prevent back pain and soreness so you can fully enjoy and be present for the important moments with the people you love. If you notice any pain while doing any of these activities, schedule an evaluation with a physical therapist at any of our 13 clinics in Rhode Island or Southeastern Massachusetts. We want you to be empowered to lead a healthy, fulfilling, and happy life!
